Cronulla Sutherland Kayak Club Incorporated, (founded in 1965 as Lilli Pilli Kayak Club), is one of the oldest and most successful kayak clubs in the Southern Hemisphere. The Club comprises approximately 100 members, ranging in age from 8 to 85 years of age. Members are domiciled predominantly in the St George and Sutherland regions, but many also come from as far a field as the Illawarra, the Blue Mountains, and the eastern, south western and western suburbs of Sydney.
Club members compete in flatwater (marathon and sprint), canoe polo, ‘wild / white water’ down river and slalom events. Club races are predominantly held in the autumn and winter months on the Hacking River off Grays Point. These are flatwater races ranging from distances of 2km to 20km. Each year the Club applies for an Aquatic Licence with the Waterways Authority of NSW to conduct autumn and winter series sprint and marathon races on the Hacking River.
THE HACKING RIVER
The Club does not have a home / clubhouse, or storage facilities and relies heavily upon members to store power safety boats, club trailers, kayaks and other necessary equipment. The Club currently has a licence agreement with NSW Scouts & Grays Point Scout Group to hire the hot showers and clean toilets at Grays Point in the autumn and winter months. The Club, which is a non profit community based organisation, has a minimal income stream.
The Club boasts past Olympians, (Barry Kelly, Robert Lee, Ray Martin, Jim Walker, Tony Schumacher & Daniel Collins), past and current Australian representative paddlers, as well as current Australian and World Masters Champions.
In recent years the Club has embarked on a conscious recruitment campaign to boost membership, particularly in respect of juniors and their parents. To this end Cronulla Sutherland Kayak Club and the four Bate Bay Surf Lifesaving Clubs enjoy a good relationship with many veteran, open and junior lifesavers being members of the Kayak Club in order to enhance their paddling skills and cross train in the autumn and winter months.
OUR OBJECTIVES
To promote all aspects of the sport and especially to encourage younger persons into the sport. The club has built up a tradition for participation in the true spirit of canoeing over many years.
To continue and build on the standards set by those before us.
